Last week, I wrote about social networking sites, especially Facebook and the surprising fact that Twitter is the most popular SNS (social networking site) in Japan.
I think a major reason why Twitter is popular around the world is because it limits how much people can write - 140 characters.
That’s good news for busy people, they don’t have to write as much… or read as much of what ‘important’ things people have to say.
The fact is, my ‘important’ and your ‘important’ may be different. For some people on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram among other sites - might be pictures of pets, food or friends. On Twitter you can post a few photos a day. On Facebook, I’ve seen people upload more than 100 images in a single post!
That’s where Twitter is better. You have to think about what you post. On Facebook, there is no limit and you can write as much as you like, and post hundreds of pictures. I have seen posts with similar images, some out of focus and some which don’t appear to be important… to anyone.
When I look at Facebook, I find that I spend a lot of time scrolling past things that aren’t important to me. I have a lot of friends, and if every friend posted once a day, I wouldn’t have time to look at everything posted on my Facebook page. I use Facebook as a means to keep my friends in one place and see what they are doing - not necessarily every day. I’m not a stalker.
If I used Twitter, I think I’d go crazy. It’s just not important for me to know that every day you’re having a coffee (in Paris) and playing with your dog (in Cape Town).
In my Facebook page, my friends usually posting about their school life with long sentences and many photos. It's fun to read but sometime they're nuisance. So I agree with your idea which try to write about what’s important to my friends. Because I don't want to be obstacle person for my friends!

ReplyDeleteThanks for agreeing with me Mizuka .;-) The advantage with having your school friends write a lot on Facebook is that you can help each other with school stuff - you know, homework and so on. Let me know if they write anything bad about me. ;-)
I don't use Twitter but other SNS. I agree with your opinion that my important is not as important as you important. Sometimes, my friends' posts disgust me because they post a lot and also to be honest, I compare with them. I think teenager tend to post a lot because they want people to know myself.

DeleteI agree with you Koto. It's a teenage thing, wanting to be noticed. It's the same in Australia, as children grow older and become adults, they want their own identity - these are your teenage years and for some people - both teenagers AND parents - it's a really difficult time. I hope your teenage years are going smoothly for you.
I have same thought as you. I cannot understand why people post all the photos they took even though they aren't nice.Teenagers usually use Facebook as photo albums. It is ok to use in that way, however, it doesn't have to publish in public.
ReplyDeleteI saw a news about Facebook. The news is that the rate of teenagers using Facebook is completely low. More that 45% teenagers used Facebook last year, but only 27% of them are still using it.
For me, Facebook(also twitter) is the only site to check my friends post and I never post anything.

Good thinking Reiko. I sometimes post photos because my family and friends in Australia like to see what Japan is like. However, it's usually one or two images. I'm glad that Facebook is losing users, it might mean that people are getting back to talking to each other rather than posting at everyone.
I rarely use Twitter and Facebook.I don't feel that those are necessary. But I agree with your opinion. If I use Twitter,I would think about what's important to my friends. We should reduce time to use SNS,and we would be able to use time in effective way more.

DeleteThanks Yui. I guess Twitter is better since you can't post too much with the 140 character limit. However, because the postings can be short, it's possible to write lots of short posts. Maybe we can start a SNS called Hakiri, and allow only one (short) post every day. Any other name suggestions?
